Frequently Asked Questions about BTI
What is BTI?
BTI stands for Bacillus Thuringiensis Israelensis, the active ingredient in Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits. It is a soil dwelling bacteria that kills mosquito larvae when ingested. It is an effective, biological method of
mosquito control. Find out more about BTI.
How does BTI work?
As mosquito larvae feed on organic material within the stagnant water, they consume the BTI spores released by the Mosquito Dunks and Bits. These are highly toxic to the digestive system to the larvae and it will kill it.
Why Use Mosquito Dunks and Bits that contain BTI?
Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits kill mosquitoes in the larval stage before they are old enough to bite and transmit disease like West Nile Virus, Encephalitis, Malaria, and other mosquito borne diseases. By targeting the breeding sites,
you can drastically reduce the mosquito population in your area.
Where is BTI applied?
Anywhere there is standing or stagnant water. Common places are fish ponds, ditches, flood areas but even areas around the household such as gutters, old tires, and even bird baths can be home to thousands of future mosquitoes.
Why is BTI so effective?
It is a natural, biological method of control and that targets and kills in the larva's natural habitat. The long term control of the Mosquito Dunks has a residual effect for up to 30 days
Is BTI completely Safe to Use?
Yes! BTI is only harmful to mosquito, black fly and filter fly larvae. It is natural and specifically used due to it's low toxicity to the environment, fish, pets, wildlife, and humans. You can safely use it in your
fish ponds and aquatic habitats with no worries. It can even be used in animal watering troughs.
Though, it is not meant to be used in water used for human consumption, it can be safely used in water tanks, if you use a filter before to filter out the particles before it is used. Use Mosquito Bits first for a very quick
kill if needed, then put the Mosquito Dunks in after to keep the water free of larvae.
What is the shelf life of the Mosquito Dunks and Bits?
Mosquito Bits have an indefinite shelf life, as long as they are stored at temperatures below 100°F
Can Mosquito Dunks be used in water tanks?
Though, BTI is not meant to be used in water used for human consumption, it can be safely used in water tanks, IF you use a filter before the water is used. Typically, if there are millions of larvae in the water, you may
need to use the Mosquito Bits first for a very quick kill, then put the Mosquito Dunks in after to keep the water free of larvae.
Are Mosquito Dunks and Mosquito Bits Approved?
Both the Dunks and the Bits are approved in all 50 states and registered for sale by Health Canada Pest Management Regulatory Agency.
